Fear No Evil

Selected Excerpts

"You have to recognize the ever-present sluggish quality that exists in every personality. There is one trend that strives upward. I have started this lecture by saying that this trend is present in every creature and is striving toward God. But often this yearning is misunderstood, misinterpreted, and directed into a wrong channel. Nevertheless, this striving is there. It takes some spiritual awareness to understand this yearning and to direct it properly. But, at the same time, there also exists in every human being a sluggish quality, which is imbedded, of course, in the lower self. This sluggish quality does not wish to overcome, to fight, or to do what is considered uncomfortable. As long as you do not recognize your own sluggish quality, you cannot get ahead."
Lecture 28 - Communication With God -- Daily Review

"In reference to this shortcut I mentioned previously, if you sense this lack of belief existing within you (or even if you do not have this problem or fear), there is one wonderful, sure, fast way to experience God and His reality, as well as the reality of God's spirit world around you, so strongly that all doubts will dissolve like snow in the sun. That way is sacrifice, my friends. If you are capable of sacrificing something for God, you will have that experience. And the knowledge, the certainty, the sense of reality you will gain from it will be infinitely more wonderful than what you have given up in sacrifice."
Lecture 28 - Communication With God -- Daily Review

"In opening yourself to God, you should think first, "What is it I really want?" Often problems arise because you are not clear in your mind what you actually want. Once you have given yourself the answer to that and you clearly realize the decision to go one way or the other, once you have clearly established your wish and your preference, then ask yourself the next question: "Is this perhaps not God's will?"
Lecture 28 - Communication With God -- Daily Review

"You do not have to be extremely far in development in order to accomplish this. Anyone can do it. All you should do is to review your day and think of all the instances that have caused you disharmony in any manner, shape, or form. Even if you cannot at the beginning understand why you felt in disharmony, just put down the incident and what you have felt. When you have done this for a while, a pattern will evolve that still may not give you a clue as to what is wrong in your own inner makeup, but you will at least see a repetition that points out that there must be something in you that is wrong, no matter how wrong other people who are involved may be in their own way. If something recurs constantly, it is a clue to your own soul."
Lecture 28 - Communication With God -- Daily Review

"Often you do not notice the repetition and the pattern in your life, my friends, You just pass over the obvious. You are so used to the assumption that certain things are coincidence, or some fate testing you arbitrarily, or merely that other people in your surroundings are responsible for your repeated mishaps. Therefore, you pay more attention to the slightest variations of each incident than to basic character, the common denominator of all the happenings that are due to your image.
Most human psychologists have found this to be a fact. But what they often do not know is that these images have seldom been started in this lifetime, no matter how early they were formed. Most of the time an image is of old standing and is carried over from one lifetime to another. That is why incidents that will not form an image in a child or a person who is free of that particular conflict will help form an image in an entity who has brought that image into this life. Although the essential thing is to find the image and its formation and origin in the present life so that it can be adequately dissolved, there are nevertheless cases where the knowledge of all the complete facts would be very useful to the physician. In other words, such an image can often be successfully treated without the knowledge of the previous life origin. But there are cases where the mere knowledge of the "carryover" principle would be of invaluable help."
Lecture 38 - Images

"The way to start searching for the images is to think back in your life and to find all the problems. Write them down. Include problems of all sorts. You cannot do it unless you take the trouble to put everything down, black on white, concisely. For, if you merely think about it, you will not have the overall view that is necessary for comparison. This written work is essential. It is certainly not too much to ask. You do not have to do it all in one day. Take your time, even if it takes a few months. It is better to do it slowly than not to start at all. Then, when you think of all your big and small troubles, even the most nonsensical, the most insignificant ones, start to look for the common denominator."
Lecture 38 - Images

"Only then will you have given up some of your selfwill, which wishes to deny life in its present form, the very form that is necessary for your development. Only then will you have acquired the humility not to wish to be protected from these risks and hardships of life. They will cease to be necessary only after you can fearlessly accept and shoulder them. Therefore it is a good beginning to make a review of your life, concisely enumerating all your troubles. And then go on to search for the common denominator."
Lecture 38 - Images

But while your image lives, you continue the childish procedure because in that respect your mind remains as it was when you were a child, regardless of how much the rest of your personality has improved, learned, and is otherwise capable of judging maturely, intellectually, and, in some instances, other than with the image-currents, even emotionally. But where this shock-impression has taken place (slow or sudden shock) due to the fact that one does not assimilate the experience consciously, the mind remains childish. It remains in the state it was in when the image conclusions were formed and put into the subconscious.
Lecture 41 - Images -- The Damage they do

"Everything in the unconscious is primitive, ignorant, and very often illogical, although it does follow a certain limited logic of its own. The vicious circle that is my subject tonight begins in childhood, where all images are formed.
In every image you will find: inferiority feelings, guilt feelings, hostility, hate, aggression, ignorance, resentment, childish selfishness, fear, and a few other obstructive forces. In the more primitive person all these traits manifest outwardly and are directed towards the outer world. As the human being develops from incarnation to incarnation, he finally realizes it to be considered as bad and wrong, and therefore a disadvantage, to show such feelings openly."
Lecture 50 - The Great Vicious Circle of Immature Love

"There are very few adults who are as mature emotionally as they are intellectually."
Lecture 50 - The Great Vicious Circle of Immature Love

"You are so conditioned by the emotional reactions you have become accustomed to, you are so involved in them, that you cannot see what is right before your eyes. You look past the seemingly unimportant emotional reactions to certain situations, simply because they have become a part of you, while you watch for new and hidden recognitions. But these actual emotional reactions will furnish the clue, once your attention is focused on them. This would be impossible if you were not disturbed. Therefore, the disturbance is bound to come into the open, and this is the moment when you can come to terms with it."
Lecture 84 - Love, Power, Serenity as Divine Attributes and as Distortions -- Idealized Self Image Part Two

"Love will not be a means to an end. It will not be a need that saves you from annihilation. It will, therefore, cease to be self-centered. Your own capacity to love will combine with power and serenity. Or, to put it differently, you will communicate in love and understanding in healthy interdependence, but will be truly independent because love, power, and serenity will not take the place of furnishing your missing self-respect. Genuine, not self-centered, love will then no longer interfere with healthy power; not power out of pride and defiance, not power to triumph over others, but the power to master yourself and your difficulties without proving anything to anyone."
Lecture 84 - Love, Power, Serenity as Divine Attributes and as Distortions -- Idealized Self Image Part Two

"...any compulsion comes from an unconscious conclusion that something must be had, attained, gotten. But by the time this reaches the outer personality, the goal may have been shifted to a substitute."
Lecture 84 - Love, Power, Serenity as Divine Attributes and as Distortions -- Idealized Self Image Part Two

"Under no circumstances are you a prey to distorted forms of others because, if you truly search within yourself, such effects will help you to bring out your own distortions so that you become aware of them and learn to cope with them in solving the underlying problems."
Lecture 84 - Love, Power, Serenity as Divine Attributes and as Distortions -- Idealized Self Image Part Two

"Let me repeat here what I have often said: first the outer negative events will continue to come your way, as a result of your past ingrained patterns, but you will encounter them in a different way. As you learn to do so, you will become aware of many opportunities for happiness that you ignored in the past. In this way you begin to change the patterns until very, very gradually, perhaps in the process of several incarnations, the unhappy outer events cease more and more. But when you find yourself at the beginning of this stage, do not expect immediate fulfillment and happiness in every respect. Do not expect that it comes from the outside without your creating it by learning and experiencing in a productive way. First you need to see your possibilities and opportunities and independent ability to choose, instead of being utterly helpless and waiting for fate to bring you happiness."
Lecture 100 - Meeting The Pain of Destructive Patterns

"As you go through the process of becoming aware of your needs and of the frustration of their unfulfillment, you will find first the stringent need to be loved, just as the child needs to receive love and affection. However, it cannot be said that the need to be loved is childish and immature. It is only so when the adult person has locked his soul and refused to grow in his own capacity to give love, so that the need to receive remains isolated, as well as covered. Through your destructive patterns you pushed your painful need to receive love into the unconscious. Due to this unawareness and to your defense mechanisms of various sorts, your ability to give could never grow within your psyche. "
Lecture 100 - Meeting The Pain of Destructive Patterns

"You need to feel and observe the frustration of not finding an outlet, the accumulated pressure, the momentary feeling of helplessness about finding relief, the temptation to evade yet again. As you battle through this phase and grow stronger, you will no longer run away from yourself and from the apparent risk of living. Opportunities will come your way. You will see them and make use of them. They will teach you to further your growth and strength, until your needs can find partial fulfillment and then, little by little, increase it as you grow and change your patterns."
Lecture 100 - Meeting The Pain of Destructive Patterns

"It is essential that you pay more attention to the no-current in its exact form. A certain type of meditation can help: Become very quiet and relaxed, and begin by observing your thinking process, and even your initial inability to do so. This eventually leads to keeping thoughts out for a short while and making yourself utterly empty. In the emptiness it is possible for the hitherto checked and repressed material to surface, if you express this purpose and desire it strongly enough, without shying away from the effort to reach the goal. Though difficult at the beginning, this effort will, after a while, establish a channel to a part of you that you could not previously tap."
Lecture 124 - The Language Of The Unconscious

"Ask yourself: (1) What goal do I want now? Where am I dissatisfied? What would I want to be different? (2) How much do I want it? (3) To what extent is there something in me that does not want or fear it, or, for one reason or another, says No to it? (4) If this no-current exists regarding the very thing I wish, it must also exist in my pathwork itself. How does it manifest there? (5) How can I detect the various forms and manifestations of the no-current in my daily life?"
Lecture 124 - The Language Of The Unconscious

"The yes-current must observe the no-current. Let this be your motto. To the degree that you are successful in communicating with your own unconscious and understanding its language, you establish a connection with a deeper, wiser part of your unconscious. It will eventually take over and guide you through all phases of your life, also those where you have not yet been successful. This helpful part of your unconscious must constantly furnish you with regenerative strength, creative energy, resourcefulness, and harmony. But this help can come only when you have learned to become aware of, observe, and decipher the part of the unconscious where it is petrified and destructive. When you learn to do this with calm detachment, you will not only learn to communicate with the constructive part of your unconscious, but will also consciously communicate with the unconscious of other people."
Lecture 124 - The Language Of The Unconscious

"These are the steps of purification in the deepest and most vital way. Purification is unthinkable without going through these four steps. Purification is also unthinkable without receiving active help. It is too difficult to do alone. It is utter illusion to hope -- consciously or unconsciously -- that facing these aspects of your being can be avoided, skipped, bypassed, or whisked away by some magic "spiritual" means. Self-realization, or self-actualization, or reaching your spiritual center, or whatever other name you wish to use in order to describe the goal of all living, cannot occur unless you face your deepest negativities and hypocrisies and your deliberate intent to be negative and destructive, spiteful and resentful. Often you will forgo your own happiness just to punish someone from your past. This is painful, or at first seems painful, but to the degree the realization is painful, it will prove liberating."
Lecture 176 - Overcoming Negativity

"This important aspect of meditation requires a great deal of time, patience, perseverance, and determination. Remember at all times that wherever you are unfulfilled, wherever there are problems, wherever there is conflict in your life, you should not concentrate with woe on others or on circumstances outside your control, but you should reach inside and explore the causes imbedded in your own egotistical childish level. Meditation is an absolute prerequisite for this. You must gather yourself calmly and quietly and seek the truth. Ask for an answer as to the causes that you contributed in this particular circumstance. In this state of mind peace will come to you, even before you fully understand."
Lecture 182 - The Process Of Meditation

"You have to identify with the destructiveness and yet you have to be detached from it. You have to realize that it is part of you and you must also realize that there is another part of you that can have the final word, if you so choose. You have to widen the limitations of your conscious ego expressions by realizing that you can say at any moment: "I will be stronger than my destructiveness and will not be hampered by it. I determine that my life will be at its best and its fullest, and that I will overcome the inner blocks that make me want to remain unhappy. My determination will give me the power which will enable me to experience more and more bliss as I let go of the doubtful pleasure of being negative, which I now fully recognize." This is the task of the conscious ego. As this is accomplished, the powers of guidance, wisdom, strength, and a new inner feeling of love and penetration of the universal self will come forth."
Lecture 182 - The Process Of Meditation

"When you feel yourself stymied and hopeless, it should be a sign for you to search for that part in you that says: "I do not wish to change. I do not wish to be constructive." Set out to find this voice. Through meditation, you can explore and let the worst in you express itself."
Lecture 182 - The Process Of Meditation

"Each day brings new tasks, exciting tasks, beautiful tasks. Your inner work should not be approached in a spirit of wanting to get it over with, as if life will begin only after this inner work is done. On the contrary, doing this work is "living" at its best. You may begin each meditation by asking yourself: "How do I really feel at this moment? In what respect am I dissatisfied? What is it that I may be avoiding to face?"
Lecture 182 - The Process Of Meditation

"As long as you do not acknowledge the aspects you hate in yourself, you are blind to them and therefore helplessly controlled by them. But when you acknowledge them, something else in you takes over that can do something about them, even if all it can do initially is merely observe and grope for a clearer understanding of the underlying dynamics. You create a totally different situation when you identify the ugly traits as opposed to being identified with them."
Lecture 189 - Self-Identification Determined Through Stages Of Consciousness

"The moment you identify the destructive aspects, name them, state them, articulate them, observe them, a self exists which identifies, names, states, articulates, and observes. This self is capable of choosing among many options and possibilities, the most basic being this stating, observing, naming, etc."
Lecture 189 - Self-Identification Determined Through Stages Of Consciousness

"How different your attitude toward yourself must be when you realize that it is the task of human entities to carry negative aspects with them for the purpose of integrating and synthesizing them."
Lecture 189 - Self-Identification Determined Through Stages Of Consciousness

"Every minute of depression or anxiety, every hopeless or otherwise negative attitude towards a situation contains various other options. But an act of inner will on your part is required to awaken forces in you that are now dormant and to make them available. Then, when the already available potential is being used, a much greater power of spiritual consciousness will unfold, gradually and organically. People often engage in various spiritual practices and then wait for a miraculous manifestation of the greater consciousness, while their immediate mind and thought power is trapped in grooves of negative attitudes, feelings, thinking, and outlook. These people must either be disappointed or experience delusions. No exercises or efforts, no hopes for grace as an intervention from outside can bring you genuine awareness and manifestations of your spiritual self."
